Mary Jo Hayes, MSEd, MAOM, MS, PhD, ofs, AP
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Dr. Hayes graduated with a MAOM from Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine in 2006 and maintains an active practice in Gainesville, FL. Before entering the field of acupuncture, she worked for the Florida Department of Agriculture doing Bio-control research. Mary Jo holds a PhD in Ecology from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA, two Masters of Science: one in Science Education from the University of Florida and a second one in Physiology from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA.
Through out her career, she has had a love of education: as a teacher, a mentor, and a student, always, in love with learning and growing in diverse areas. She taught at Waycross High School, Georgia Southern University, University of Georgia, and Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine and conducted numerous seminars throughout her career.
From her first day at Dragon Rises, Dr. Hayes developed a deep appreciation for the work and teaching of Dr. Leon Hammer, MD. She studied the pulse with him and is currently certified by Dr. Hammer as a pulse instructor via Contemporary Oriental Medicine (COM) Foundation. She co-taught the COM Case Studies classes with Dr. Hammer for 2 years and has taught other COM courses at Dragon Rises. The Diagnostic and Treatment strategies taught in the COM program have been central to her private practice from the beginning. Mary Jo’s love of COM led her to join the Contemporary Oriental Medicine (COM) Foundation as a founding member. She retired from the Foundation in March of 2020 and was appointed to the Governing Board for Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine in March of 2020. As Chair of the Governing Board, she is also serves as the Liaison for the college to the Foundation.
