Introduction

Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine

The purpose of Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine is to graduate successful, caring physicians who as competent practitioners of the historically based, ever evolving Contemporary Oriental Medicine will be able to help people achieve both genuine healing and their highest sustainable level of long-term health and wellness. Our graduates make a difference ...and a living.

Integration

At Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine, we teach Contemporary Oriental Medicine, a comprehensive and cohesive model incorporating Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), 5 Element Theory, and many strengths of the diverse traditions of Oriental medicine. We teach an integrated model, in an integrated fashion, and our students graduate with a sound foundation of diagnostic and treatment principles on which to build an effective practice.

Diagnosis

Dragon Rises College provides exceptional training in all aspects of Oriental diagnosis with special emphasis on the science and art of pulse diagnosis.

Contemporary Pulse Diagnosis, based on the work of John HF Shen, OMD and further developed by Leon Hammer, MD, is taught as a basic part of the curriculum. The pulse provides the foundation for an in depth diagnosis and for preventive medicine. Pulse diagnosis is an exquisite and sophisticated means of understanding the whole person. The pulse reveals the patient's constitution, previous illnesses, early insults to normal physiology, environmental stressors, trauma, lifestyle, emotions and behavior. Pulse diagnosis can also predict possible future pathologies with accuracy. This allows the practitioner to address the patient's unique situation rather than a pattern, disease, or Causative Factor. Dragon Rises is currently the only college in the United States teaching this sensitive and subtle skill.

Contemporary Oriental Medicine emphasizes the patient's lifestyle as a primary causative factor of disease and a key component of the treatment plan. Students are taught to identify the impact of lifestyle choices, and support the patient in establishing change. They learn how to foster therapeutic relationships essential to a successful healing intervention. Our strong clinical orientation provides a rich and meaningful experience, grounding students in the practice of Oriental Medicine.

Faculty

The college faculty represent a wide range of experience in both Oriental and Western medicine. The senior member of the faculty is Leon Hammer, M.D. who began the practice of acupuncture and Oriental medicine 33 years ago. He is an internationally renowned diagnostician and teacher, and is the author of many articles in the field of acupuncture and oriental medicine as well as two classic books, Chinese Pulse Diagnosis, A Contemporary Approach and Dragon Rises Red Bird Flies, Psychology and Chinese Medicine. Small class sizes and the open exchange between Administration, Faculty, and Students help create the college's warm and friendly atmosphere. The supportive educational environment accommodates many learning styles and promotes individual achievement.
