After working with Fritz Perls for a period of three years and Alexander Lowen over a period of eight years, he began a study of Chinese medicine in England during 1971-1974. Since 1974, he has followed a Chinese Master, Dr. John Shen in New York City and in 1981, spent four months studying this medicine in Beijing, China. In 1975, Dr. Hammer was certified to practice acupuncture in New York State, and in 1988 he became a registered acupuncturist in Maryland, where he studied and taught at the Traditional Acupuncture Institute. In 1985 he was granted honorary Diplomate in Acupuncture status by the NCCA.

Dr. Hammer has practiced Chinese medicine from 1973 to 1990. He has lectured and taught in places as diverse as Poland, Italy, Germany, England, Australia, and Japan as well as all over the United States. In 1984, he served as a member of the Commission for Evaluation of Acupuncture Schools, and in 1995, he was appointed a member of the National Blue Ribbon Committee for Initiation of the Herbal Examination. From 1991 to 1998, he served as a member on the New York State Board of Acupuncture.

Dr. Hammer was first published on the subject of Chinese medicine in the American Journal of Acupuncture in 1980. His book, Dragon Rises Red Bird Flies, 1990, translated and published in Germany in 2000, has become a classic in the field; and his second book, Chinese Pulse Diagnosis, A Contemporary Approach, published in the fall of 2001, has been described as a seminal work. In 2001, Dr. Hammer received an award as "Educator of the Year" for participation and contribution to excellence in education from the American Association of Oriental Medicine. In 2002, he received an award from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Foundation for "Building Bridges of Integration" between Oriental medicine and Western Medicine.

Retired from private practice since 1990, Dr. Hammer continued to teach workshops in various aspects of Chinese medicine in the United States, Europe, and Australia, to write in the field, and provide consultations to practitioners.

In April 2001, Dr. Hammer helped found the Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine in Gainesville, Florida, where he is Chairman of the Board, providing guidance and direction, and a member of the faculty. What distinguishes the school is its strong focus on diagnosis, especially Contemporary Chinese pulse, and its curriculum, Contemporary Oriental Medicine, that stresses psychology and integrates parts of various models including TCM and Five-Element into a unique whole, as well as its varied, dedicated administration and faculty. The College is accredited by the national accreditation commission for acupuncture and Oriental medicine, and licensed by the state of Florida to grant Master's degrees in acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
